Cory Hersh, Ph.D.

Academic & Professional Background

Dr. Hersh is a pre-licensed psychologist. He earned his M.Ed. in Counseling Psychology from Temple University, and his Ph.D. in Urban Education with a specialization in Counseling Psychology from Cleveland State University. Over the course of his professional career he has worked in a variety of different settings, including university counseling centers, a charter school, a community mental health agency, and group practice. Dr. Hersh specializes in, and is passionate about, the provision of mental health and performance services to athletes of all levels. His training includes his athletics-focused internship at the University of Akron Counseling and Testing Center, as well as his postdoctoral fellowship at Princeton University Counseling and Psychological services where he specialized in Sport Psychology and Eating Concerns.

Athletic (and performance) Background

Dr. Hersh’s athletic experience spans the course of his life as he has played the youth and high school (Swimming), briefly collegiate (Rowing), and post collegiate (Indoor Cycling and Weightlifting) levels. Along with team and individual training, Dr. Hersh has also worked as a swimming coach at the youth, middle, high school, and club levels.  

Along with his experience around athletics, Dr. Hersh also has a unique understanding about performance in an artistic context as he plays guitar and has been part of several rock bands.

Services

Dr. Hersh strives to create a safe, empathic, and empowering therapeutic space to assist athletes in meeting their performance and mental health goals. He draws primarily from a combination of person-centered and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and strongly believes in meeting clients where they are and in adapting the therapeutic process to fit their individual needs. His specialties include anxiety, depression, eating concerns, trauma, identity development, interpersonal relationships, mindfulness, goal-setting, career counseling, and sport psychology. Dr. Hersh has also presented on a variety of topics dealing with athletic performance and services, including his research (which focuses on factors influencing career confidence, such as athletic identity and social support), managing performance anxiety, and trauma-informed sport practices.
